Cape Verde had good cause for confidence in 2005. Marking its 30th year of independence, the Atlantic island group saw its unflinching efforts to create a stable and economically viable state rewarded with recognition and incentives from global financial institutions and governments. Graduating from LDC status constituted a major milestone, with the transition to More Developed Country expected to be completed in 2008. Cape Verde was also the first nation to receive a compact worth $110 million from the Millennium Challenge Corporation.
